    Budget 2012

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today presented Union Budget 2012, the 81st Budget in India's history. Individually, this is Mukherjee's seventh annual Budget, second-highest by any Finance Minister.

Person of the Year: Anna Hazare

There was one man who dominated headlines this year - first for bringing an able (if one could say that) government to its knees, then for getting the nation to take to the streets to lament the inability of the government to do anything right, then for rifts in his paradise, then for - you get the drift.

Sportsperson of the Year: Sachin Tendulkar

Is there any surprise here? Sachin might well be the sportsperson of the decade, if not the last two decades and indeed, for a better part of this millennium for India. As compatriot and starry-eyed fellow player Virat Kohli put it, for the better part of 20 years, Sachin has carried the burden of a nation's expectation on his shoulders alone.

Celeb of the Year: Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif, a British-Indian actress and model, has tasted success with films like Namastey London, New York, Rajneeti, and Welcome. The glamorous actress shot to fame this year with her sizzling performance in an item number, in her movie Tees Maar Khan.

Word(s) of the Year: Lokpal Bill

Anna Hazare, anti-corruption and the Lokpal Bill – three words that have been synonymous with each other this past year, and three words that have been on the lips of every Indian.
The Lokpal bill targets the corruption that has permeated all ranks of government, and aims at addressing citizen grievances and protecting the interests of whistle-blowers. Literally translated, Lokpal means “protector of the people.”

Gadget of the Year: Samsung Galaxy Tab

With the tablet’s popularity skyrocketing this year, it is the Samsung Galaxy Tab that we have to thank for bringing Android into the tablet market.

    Destination of the Year: Goa

Goa - the land of beaches, is a perfect blend of the traditional and modern aspects of life. An ideal combination of sun, sand, and surf, Goa is a must-go if you are touring India. The best time to visit is between the cooler months of November and March, when the weather is pleasant and the seas are calm and clear.

Car of the Year: Maruti Swift

The most talked about car of the year, the Maruti Swift took up to 50,000 bookings prior to launch!

Lifestyle Term of the Year: Yoga

Yoga is undoubtedly the ‘in’ thing today. Gone are the days when people ran on treadmills and spent hours puffing and panting. The mantra for fitness has migrated over the years from the pricey gyms to silent yoga centres under thatched roofs. The trend was triggered after Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor attributed Suryanamaskarasfor her ‘size zero’ figure.

    2G Spectrum

Has Sonia Gandhi Made Manmohan Singh a dummy PM? The Corrupt Have Treated the PM with Contempt, as SC Hearing Shows! Were the Likes of Raja Emboldened by any Support from Her?

Inaction (or slow action) continues to reign in India even as the 2G scam appears to be evolving by the day. Questions raised by the Supreme Court yesterday and reports emanating from the CBI periodically only make for spicy reading, with little in terms of quick follow-up action, giving ample time for suspected political and economic criminals to plan their defence and escape strategy.

    Slow Death for Kasab

That is how I take the decision of India’s Supreme Court on Monday to stay the execution of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab, who has been in jail since 2008 over his involvement in Mumbai’s 26/11 explosions.

Steve Jobs — An Aesthete who gave Technology a Touch of Beauty

In the death of Appleco- founder Steve Jobs yesterday the youth have lost an aesthete who gave them next-generation objects of beauty they will struggle to live without.

He was a genius who defined taste by helping design technological artefacts that looked great, delivered futuristic functionality and launched trends that became fashion statements. Embodying electronic grace and leaving an electric effect on users!
Market Panic and Optimism are Both out of Whack

Panic one day and new-found optimism the next! There is no basis for either, but that best sums up the way stock markets, analysts and investors have been behaving of late!

Amid an uncertain economic climate, volatility is only to be expected. However, the wild swings we saw the last few days appear to be steeped in manipulation. It is not as if Europe’s debt woes and the slumping American economy came straight out of the blue. They have been lingering the last few years. There may have been little to warrant any euphoria.
    Remember 9/11 - 10 Years Later

One 9/11 was all it took for the U.S. to keep a repeat, or anything close, at bay. Perhaps, they received some geographical help as well given that America is not surrounded by hostile Muslim neighbours just as India is. But you have to give it to the U.S. for its single-mindedness in pursuing the perpetrators of 9/11. Ten years on, Al-Qaeda is now crippled and almost non-existent with its dreaded leader Osama bin Laden killed in a U.S. raid at his hideout in Pakistan a few months ago.
Anna Hazare and the Robert Redford Punchline

Ages ago, when I was a student, I remember watching a Robert Redford film on prison reforms. One particular scene is still fresh in my memory. As Robert walks out of a discussion, he is asked: “Won’t you be ready for a compromise?” To this, he replies: “Maybe on strategy, but not on principles.”
bluearrow Will Cisco Regain its Competitive Edge?
Cisco came in at rank 20 among the best companies to work for in the annualFortune study in 2011. That was four notches below the previous year.
bluearrow Time for a Graceful Exit from the Game, Roger Federer

To avoid getting their fingers burnt, traders must learn to cut their losses when the going is tough and press ahead. I hardly have the mind to do that which should explain why stock and forex trading always left me deep in the red. It’s easy to preach, not practice, after all!
bluearrow India beat Sri Lanka to win ICC World Cup 2011

An inspired India on Saturday night regained the coveted World Cup after 28 years as they suppressed Sri Lanka with a six-wicket victory in a nerve-wrecking final to script a glorious new chapter in their cricketing history.

Chasing 275 for a historic win, the Indians held their nerves as they rode on Gautam Gambhir's 97 and Mahendra Singh Dhoni's unbeaten 91 to overhaul the target with 10 balls to spare and send the cricket-crazy nation into a frenzy.

bluearrow Smokin' Joe elevated to greatness by Ali rivalry

Olympic gold-medalist. Undisputed world heavyweight champion. Twelve world-title fights. A 73% knockout record. Arguably the best left hook in history. All this with a gammy arm and while blind in one eye. You see, it can be done, outlining Joe Frazier's greatness without mentioning 'the other one'. Ah well, I very nearly managed it.

bluearrow World Cup Team of the Tournament

Right, here it is, what the world has been waiting for: the BBC Sport website's Rugby World Cup team of the tournament. Ten All Blacks, three Welshmen and two Frenchmen - and only one Englishman warrants an 'honourable mention', which tells its own story.

There were two basic provisos: players were picked on performances in the tournament rather than reputation and players could not be picked out of position. Therefore, no inside-centres playing 13 (that means you, Roberts) and no open-sides playing on the opposite flank (that means you, O'Brien). So, having rolled the grenades under the door, it is time to bid a hasty retreat and watch the flak fly from the safety of our office...

bluearrow Cleverly & Bellew show their class

"You can dress it up any way you want, but we went in there to do damage to each other. That's boxing, and boxing's all I've got." Tony Bellew

While Saturday's world title contest between Nathan Cleverly and Tony Bellew is certainly a contender for domestic fight of the year, perhaps the best performance of the night came later, away from the bright lights, down in the bowels of the arena.
